Doug Hurley Speaks Before SpaceX Launch
Doug Hurley is a veteran astronaut who joined NASA in 2000, and has so far completed two successful missions for the space agency. Hurley, born in New York graduated from Tulane University and started his career as a pilot in the United States Marine Corps. He piloted Space Shuttle missions STS-127 and STS-135. The later, in July 2011, was the final space shuttle flight off United States soil before another historic launch in May 2020: the SpaceX Demo-2 flight to the International Space Station. Hurley is married to retired astronaut Karen Nyberg; they have one son together, Jack Hurley.
Seven days after this photo was taken, NASA astronaut Doug Hurley would embark on the Demo-2 mission. Along with Bob Behnken, he would complete the first space shuttle launch since 2011. Here, he’s seen speaking to reporters at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida while wearing his flight suit. To see more photos of Hurley, scroll through this gallery.
