Pride parades are the perfect opportunity for LGBTQ groups to celebrate the community and push for securing civil rights around the world. In the U.S., since Donald Trump took office in January 2017, there have been numerous marches and protests as fear continues to grow that his administration plans to destroy measures that are already in place to protect the rights of transgender youth and adults. “Equality and acceptance are only made possible when we speak up and fight back,” GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in April 2019 response to Trump’s ban on transgender people serving in the armed forces. “We will continue to do just that, no matter who is in the White House. And we will reverse this discriminatory attack on our military.”
GLAAD has also pushed for there to be better representation in the showbiz world. “Hollywood needs to better reflect the full diversity of the LGBTQ community,” Ellis said in May 2019.
